What is a functional costume?

 - It starts with feeling -

Humans have adorned themselves in all sorts of ways for thousands of years. These different ways of adornment don’t just help us express ourselves, they help us to feel a certain way. And sometimes, feeling a certain way helps us be a certain way. What characteristics do you want to embody? Are there clothes or accessories that you associate with those traits?

Think of war paint, party dresses, and armor. How might war paint make you feel? Or armor? How do you feel in elegant evening wear? When choosing your functional costume, think about how you want to feel, and what clothes you have worn (or dream of wearing) that make you feel like that.

We invite you to wear what you feel like a wild thing in, like a badass, and most importantly, the most yourself in. We want you to wear what makes you feel like your favorite version of yourself.

- Fit and Function -

While we want you to look and feel awesome, we will be living and traveling outdoors, so some fabrics and styles just won’t cut it. Your clothes should be comfortable and allow you to move freely. They should not create a tripping hazard (like long skirts) and should provide protection against things like sun, wind, rain, and cold. You should be able to climb, squat and sit comfortably in your clothes and they should not interfere with paddling / wearing a PFD / carrying a pack, etc.

Fabrics

The composition of the fabric matters just as much as the fit. Cotton LOVES water. It soaks up water and holds onto it, keeping you wet and cold. Aim to wear clothes made from materials that dry quickly and keep your body temperature regulated even when wet. These include: polyester, nylon, wool, cashmere, alpaca, hemp and linen. If there is cotton in your clothes, keep the amount under 20%.

Layers

Dressing in layers allows us to stay comfortable in varying levels of physical activity and temperature. Your clothes for the trip should include warm layers and rain gear to keep your dry.
